2016-06-04-5 Mount Baker Ski Ascent (Squak)

Beautiful weather blessed us with a drama-free ascent of Baker via the Squak. Great company, beautiful terrain, and abosuletly FABULOUS skiing. The Squak is a mellow glacier with few complexities this time of year. The crux crevasse at 9000' was in good form though starting to show signs of breaking through. No signs of crevasse on the Roman Wall, which we timed perfectly and were skiing at corn o'clock. Smooth, buttery, easy skiing - probably some of the best I had that wasn't powder. Also, 5hr 45min from camp -> summit, 1hr summit -> camp, including 20 minutes of transition time above the Roman Wall.

Skis on packs, melting snow on trail. That says it all. 2.5 miles to the meadow where we transitioned to skinning.

It's insanely cool how fascinated she is with sky formations - here we saw our first rainbow of the day.

Cool, clean water runoff from snow melt on rocks. Radka is standing on a snow bridge that goes into a big moat. Turns out the bridge was way fine.

Also, did I mention it was HOT? It was boiling all weekend. Sunset at camp was refreshingly cool. The climb up to the base of the Roman wall was comfortable, and then from there it was getting warmer and baking. Here we are just getting our first bits of solar radiation.

This mountain has always looked really big to me. From here, not so much. You can see the sulphide glacier and the fischer chimneys routes.

I think I counted 6 rope teams either ascending or descending.

This dude pulled out his JetBoil at almost every stop and was either melting snow or making coffee. I appreciate the man's dedication :)
